Trackday Trophy returned to action on August 11.
Snetterton’s technical 300 circuit played host to a varied mix of production and production-based saloon, hatchback and sports cars, all looking to earn their place on the class podiums.
Qualifying
As the first laps in qualifying were completed, it was the BMW 328i of Michael Rawlings (Paddock Performance Racing) who had set the early pace. However, Team Air Supply’s Wright/Allat duo were quick to respond in their Porsche 944, posting a superb lap time of 2m10.891s.
As the session progressed, competitors pushed to go quicker than Wright/Allat, but ultimately no one could better the time and the Team Air Supply duo secured pole position. Early pacesetter Rawlings joined the front row, ahead of fellow BMW Zakrzewski/Wherton (Team Dubshack) and Jack Goes (Mangoes Racing).
Two Renault Clios dominated the front of Class C in qualifying, with Q-Ball Motorsport’s Quantrell/Jarman narrowly besting PRO-AM Racing’s Harvey/Richardson by 0.166s. Team Wheelcare’s Trevor Hurrell qualified third in class, ahead of two Toyota Celica drivers in the form of Wayne Cockerill and Sarah Hobson.
Hills Motorsport’s Lundy pairing qualified fastest in a competitive Class D class, thanks to a stellar final lap. Hammond Motor Group’s Jay Coombs qualified second in class, ahead of Boreham Motorsport (Midlands) Adams/Adams. Colin Wells and Wright/Morris rounded out the top five D qualifiers.
Race
An exceptional launch from the grid and opening lap secured the race lead for Rawlings and the Paddock Performance Racing driver immediately got to work opening up a gap to the cars behind. Apple Car Centre’s Jordan Honeybone was another driver on the rise, ending the first lap in second place ahead of Zakrzewski/Wherton and Goes.
Also enjoying a fantastic start was Harvey/Richardson, who confidently took control of the Class C lead – even rising as high as fifth overall. Lundy/Lundy managed to fend off rivals to maintain the lead of Class D, but with Adams/Adams and Coombs in hot pursuit.
Rawlings successfully extended his buffer to the chasing pack as the race progressed, aided by a close battle for the podium places between Honeybone, Zakrzewski/Wherton and Goes. In fact, there was a whole host of gripping overtakes happening in all three of the classes.
Despite all the action, each of the three class leaders kept calm under the pressure from rivals to remain in front as the pit window opened.
However, a safety car being deployed during the pit window would shake up the order. After each driver had completed their stops, Honeybone had managed to leapfrog his way to the front of the order with Harvey/Richardson and Lundy/Lundy doing enough to keep themselves at the front of their classes.
Honeybone maintained the lead till the moment the checkered flag dropped to secure a second Trackday Trophy win of the 2024 season for the Apple Car Centre team! Team Air Supply’s Wright/Allat joined Honeybone on the Class B podium finishing second, with the final spot going to D.P.Service Racing’s Damian Chrupczalski. Kevin Stirling and Jon Dundee rounded out the top five Class B finishers.
Harvey/Richardson displayed tremendous speed and race craft to claim the Class C victory, leading every lap in a great showing for the #12 PRO-AM Racing Clio. Quantrell/Jarman utilised the pace they displayed in qualifying to come home in second, ahead of Aindale Racing’s Wayne Cockerill in third. Trevor Hurrell and Sarah Hobson finished fourth and fifth in class.
An excellent performance from Hills Motorsport's Lundy/Lundy was rewarded with the Class D top step, while Jay Coombs managed to edge Adams/Adams to second - completing an all Mk3 Mazda MX-5 podium. NJM Racing’s Beard/Winwood claimed fourth in class, one place ahead of Gilbert/Baldacci (77 Racing).
Trackday Trophy returns on September 7 2024 at Cadwell Park.
